It’s a breezy Sunday morning, 39 degrees, and sunny. Last week, we had temps near 90.
The last 4 weeks have been filled with tilling, planting, fencing, moving livestock to pasture, and a whirl of other Spring work.
The hills are covered in green. The trees are leafed out and the iris & lilacs are sharing their beautiful blooms. I’ve pulled so many weeds and cleaned so much garden, my hands ache.
The oats & peas crop are up. Winter rye was harvested into 60 bales of fermented silage. 45 acres of corn is in the ground with about 50 acres to go. We had to reseed about 25 acres of alfalfa because of winter kill. Most of our hay/alfalfa fields are looking healthy & we are planning a 1st harvest in a few weeks.
The cows are happily on pasture, and we’re happy for a lull in calving.
In late April we welcomed another (lgd) livestock guardian dog, a puppy we named Bernie. He’s in training with Gertie and they are enjoying a lot of playtime. Gertie is now nearly 9 months and a wonderful addition. One day we hope to mate them and offer lgd’s to other farms and homes.
The french toast our daughter made us for breakfast is ready, so I’ll close with a short video of a peak into my Sunday morning chores.
Have a blessed Spring Sunday.
